Halloween is coming up and this fall season is all about carnivals and fairs. So, why not combine the best of both. Since no county fair, amusement park or carnival is without funnel cake and Halloween is all about creepy crawly creatures, I thought we could combine the two to create an autumn Halloween treat. Funnel Cakes designed like spider webs are delectably spooky for the season.
These funnel cakes are best eaten hot and fresh. They turned out great and with a dust of confectionary sugar, looked just like spider webs. I wanted to top them with chocolate that I planned on piping in the shape of spider webs to enhance the decoration. However, for whatever reason, my chocolate would not melt right and could not be piped in my desired way. It looked more like worms, so I went with Spider Web Funnel Cakes with Chocolate Worms.
Ingredients
1 egg
3 tablespoons sugar
1 cup milk
1 ¼ cups flour
1/8 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
oil for frying
powdered sugar for toping
tempered chocolate or chocolate syrup
Method
- Beat eggs and sugar together until smooth.
- Beat in the milk.
- Add the dry ingredients except for the powdered sugar and beat until smooth with no lumps.
- In a heavy bottom skillet, heat 2 inches of oil and let heat up.
- Place the batter into a plastic bag and seal, letting all the air out. Snip a tiny hole in one of the bottom points of the bag
- Test the oil by spooning in just a little bit of the batter into the oil, if it pops up immediately with tiny bubbles around it, it’s ready.
- Start from the center in a swirling motion to make a 5 to 6-inch round. Fry on both sides until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
- To decorate with spider webs use tempered chocolate or chocolate syrup to make cross lines across the cakes so they meet in the middle. Then draw two circles, one bigger and one smaller so it resembles a spider web.
- To decorate with worms use tempered chocolate and create long lines haphazardly.
- Serve warm.
