This is my final A Fork & A Flick Friday for this year. As the year will soon come to an end and the holiday season is upon us, a film that suits the tone with a pleasant dose of holiday cheer is only befitting. As, I’m a fan of rom-coms, I went with The Holiday for my final film of the year that I will share with you here.
The Holiday is a film set in London and Los Angeles and is about two women who exchange homes to escape heartbreak during the holiday season. Be warned that this is no Bridget Jones’s Dairy style rom-com, but it’s a bit on the sweeter side. The two lovelorn women are played by Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz, which alone can perk a viewer’s interests. With loveable actors playing loveable characters, The Holiday succeeds outstandingly in living up to its title, it provides an audience with a two-hour vacation. With a soft spot for England (originally Brit) and being an LA girl myself, I could not pass up this film.
While Iris (Winslet) and Amanda (Diaz) each suffer from a minor case of culture shock during their vacation home switch, both women also end up becoming involved with a man. Iris makes the acquaintance of an upbeat film composer played by Jack Black, while Amanda spends time with Iris’s handsome British brother played by Jude Law. Both women must decide what to do with these new relationships as their pre-arranged house switch is scheduled to last less than two weeks. There is also a brilliant subplot around Iris and a relationship she builds with Arthur, a veteran screen writer played by a true screen veteran Eli Wallach.
This is a feel-good movie that not many men will appreciate, except for its value as a date movie. Seeing The Holiday makes you feel happy and light at heart, which is all it sets out to do. Sometimes you want a movie that’s rich, gooey and sweet, and The Holiday is a cinematic confection. With that said, what better choice to compliment this movie than a decant hot chocolate with marshmallows.
There are a few food relevant scenes in this film, like the conversation about brisket and chocolate covered macaroons that Miles compliments Iris on after she throws Arthur a Hanukah party. We also have a sushi scene between Iris and Miles. However, the most memorable and heartwarming scene is the one wear Amanda meets Graham’s daughters and shares hot chocolate with them. They must each have 5 marshmallows! While I have seen many foodies pair this film with peppermint hot chocolate, nowhere in the scene is there a hint of peppermint. Amanda actually gets a whip cream mustache during the sweet scene and that is the most memorable part for me. Thus, I am going with a richly made hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows to share with you today.
If you have not seen this movie yet, then perhaps a decade after its release is a good time to watch The Holiday this season. Feel warm and sweet inside while you watch this movie and sip on your hot chocolate.
